Hot Glass Studios

Alfred has one of the oldest and largest glass programs in the United States. Approximately eighty undergraduate and four graduate students currently use our massive facility. We have three full time faculty and offer a complete list of glass offerings including glass blowing, neon, casting, fusing, bending, grinding and polishing.

Our facility currently has a two thousand pound capacity continuous melt furnace for clear glass, a 1200 pound capacity furnace for colored glass, three large glory holes and twenty annealing ovens, all computer controlled.

The National Casting Center at Alfred is a cooperative project between metal and glass casting that will double the capacity of the glass facility and the metal foundry. The Center provides a dedicated glass casting facility and a new metal foundry featuring an induction furnace for melting high temperature metals such as stainless steel. The National Casting Center will also make it possible to add two more large glory holes to our glass blowing studio.

We have an extensive visiting artist program and the Paul Vickers Gardner Center for Glass which is a cooperation between glass art and glass science. All in all this is about the best place to study glass in the world.
