Pre-Art Therapy

The School of Art & Design at the N.Y.S. College of Ceramics and the Psychology Division at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Alfred University have identified a group of Psychology courses, which, in conjunction with the studio work required for the BFA degree, are minimum prerequisites for admission to the majority of graduate programs offering degrees in Art Therapy.

PSY 100: Introduction to Psychology

PSY 265: Social Development

PSY 382: Theories of Personality

PSY 365: Cognitive Development

PSY 385: Abnormal Psychology

PSY 375: Practicum (a fieldwork experience)

Recommended Electives

PSY 302: Psychological Measurement

PSY 310: Communication and Counseling Skills

Minimum of 12 credits recommended by the American Art Therapy Association (1993). Consult individual graduate programs for additional requirements.
