Dean's Message

"At Alfred, Art is a verb."

The School of Art and Design in The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University has a long illustrious history of creative excellence. It is a place where art, science and technology have merged for over a century. When you come to Alfred you will join a thriving community of professional artists and focused students. Our environment is demanding and rigorous. You will work in some of the best artmaking facilities in the world. We will challenge you, and in turn, we expect you to challenge yourself.

"Great art is made from experience."

In art, your only limitation is your imagination. We are committed to assisting both undergraduate and graduate students achieve their greatest creative potential. Our programmatic foundation rests upon these key values: personal and intellectual development, exploration and observation, understanding the symbiotic relationship between the history of art and contemporary art practice, and last but perhaps most important, skill based instruction. A strong work ethic, open-mindedness, and imaginative courage are the touchstones of serious art making.

"You can get there from here."

Like you, as a School, we too are continually evolving. Anchored by a "high touch, high tech" tradition, we are in a perpetual state of review and reflection. Our vision is driven by inspiration, current events, and innovations in the field. Yet, we also believe, you can use ancient knowledge to make new things. And it is precisely this coming together of the past, present, and the future, that makes the School of Art and Design at Alfred University an exciting place to learn, work, and live.
